ARTIST¡¯S STATEMENT

The color of the world seemed brown to me when I was a young boy, and so it has been until now, probably influenced by my fondness for Chinese ink painting.

I felt like dusk making the world uneasy, so I would stand in the ally downstairs, expecting the woman who made my heart beat to pass by.  It would be my good fortune if something - such as a loud voice calling me home for supper - could draw her attention and cause her to glance at my shadow as it was leaving.

As we ate, my sisters and I would sit on the roof of our building and try to watch the passers-by in the street, or look to see if any of the local families quarreled or yelled. Sometimes when all neighbors held the bowls to gather by enjoying the scene, we would be lucky to find something tasty to eat.

When night fell, the bulb burned yellow, and I would see my classmates on the old wall opposite my bed as I lay down. They seemed to be playing, and I always tried to act like a hero in front of them. Sometimes I would have a nightmare and suddenly wake up in the middle of night, and I would try to bury my head deep beneath the quilt to hide from the frightening darkness. Only when the neighborhood roosters started to sing did my perspiring head dare to emerge.

Life seems to me like a book when I call forth memories. Up to now I have lived half of the book, and every page of the first half has been read numerous times.  The pages are now becoming yellowed and tattered with age, but I still love them.

The question of life and death first occurred to me at the age of 17, but  my love of life releases me from concerns about life and death. Life belongs to the past, and the past is the held by the present through memories.
