rencontre
rencontre is an exhibition of works by the internationally celebrated thai architect sumet jumsai and his daughter maymay and son prisdha. sumet and maymay are exhibiting paintings while prisdha shows examples of his achievements in architecture. this is the first exhibition by the jumsai family in china and follows from a showcase titled “3” in bangkok, eighteen years later!
the chinese partners in rencontre are li yugang and xueyi fan. li yugang is widely celebrated for his practice as singer and actor. he introduces traditional chinese opera with a modern twist to the young generation and his art is welcome by worldwide audiences.
xueyi fan is a born artist. this multi talented painter, potter, poet and writer had exhibited her works all over the world.
introduction to rencontre
rencontre is an exhibition where interest ranges across painting, architecture, sculpture, design and performance with artists from thailand and china. for the jumsai family itself, this diversity is evident. the family can be traced to 19th century siam in the reign of rama iv or king mongkut when prince choomsai (son of rama iii), later created krom khun rajsihavikrom, was the first of the choomsai family; choomsai can be transliterated as jumsai or xumsai. this was an era of accelerated modernization for the kingdom and the prince was in the forefront as architect and engineer. his careers continued across generations to encompass a variety of creative and public practices that contribute to the life of the country.
rencontre translates as ‘encounter’ and here unfolds the coming together of artists in a period of time. within the jumsai family, relationships move through history and across the contemporary, from the design sensitivity of prisdha’s architecture to the intimacy of captured moments in the paintings and architecture of sumet and maymay’s artwork. in this exhibition, relationships and correspondences between thailand and china are explored while each retains their autonomy. but this is no mere conceit of a group showing; in rencontre we learn how different forms and methods can reflect each other in the structural qualities and fluid movements of all their works. the paintings of sumet emphasize line and shape through delineated motifs against colourful backgrounds. maymay’s luscious prints of thickened paint and gloss sit atop a transparent surface that reveals the wooden support of her innovative painting practice. and prisdha’s bold approach to architectural design is particularly highlighted in his plans for the new art museum (nam), yet to be built in bangkok, where grand, colorful and irregular shapes were inspired by picasso’s 1915 painting titled harlequin.
to bring these artists together is to discern how often the categories we use (‘painting’, ‘design’ and ‘modern’ or ‘contemporary’) are often mere sleights. such categories possess many correspondences that are not usually studied to great interest. perhaps it takes a comparison of the intimacy of familial relationships and an understanding of historic connections across national borders to allow such.

prisdha jumsai (thai) is an architect, a former dj and professional football player. these activities all lend themselves well to his artistic preoccupations with the visual and the structural, and possess a wide range of affective elements.
prisdha is a graduate in architecture and the moving image from cambridge university and also studied architecture at university college london. he established his practice, dymaxion studio company, nearly a decade ago and has worked on a variety of architectural projects including the tsunami and refugee center 2008 in phang nga in southern thailand, a private music studio 2007 in bangkok and a new university in bhutan in 2006, the result of an international design competition. active as a professional architect since 1996, prisdha has lectured at chulalongkorn university and king mongkut university of technology thonburi, both in thailand. prisdha has extensive experience of working in the media, including brand campaigns for g-shock thailand, nike and playground, and until a few years ago he could be heard on regular radio slots as a dj.
李玉刚li yugang
li yugang is a widely known and revered performer. he is the lead performer in the national opera and dancing company of china as well as a committee member of the national youth federation.
His works add a modern twist to the traditions of chinese opera and he has delivered over 100 shows worldwide and received many accolades. li’s cds include the new drunken beauty yang (2009), order from your dream (2012), and lotus flower (2014). all of these have been hits and his opera and dramatic works include the elusives (2010), the portrait of four ancient beauties (2011) and lady zhaojun (2015). his role as mentor to an emergent generation is legion and his influence spreads across genres in china. li now also includes watercolor painting in his repertoire and he held a solo show at xyz gallery in december 2014.

sunlight(xueyi fan)
Xueyi Fan is a poet, visual artist and director of xyz gallery beijing and season pier art space. born in heilongjiang province, this multi-disciplinary artist has been living in beijing since 1997. her first book of poetry is entitled childhood river and was published in 2001. other books include letters from a secret garden (2007) and there is a breeze (2011) and her has written songs for many tv operas as well as well the music album singing in the wind (2006). in 2007 she composed the lyrics of the theme song for the movie banquet directed by feng xiaogang. xueyi’s first solo exhibition took place at xyz gallery in 2008. other important exhibitions include hongrun huaxia art museum zhengzhou (2010) and showcases in paris (2011), berlin (2012), copenhagen (2012), the jade club of galaxy quarter in chongqing (2014), chile (2015) and the national museum of china (2015).
